Abstract The ease of flammability polymers represents a key issue that limits their applications in different advanced sectors. In this context, reliable and effective solution regards the use flame retardants, i.e., additives are able to slow down (or even stop) propagation enhance resistance an irradiative heat flux. Among retardants designed, synthesized, applied up-to-now, utilization inorganic particles, hybrid organic-inorganic coatings has gathered great interest from either academic industrial community, as these structures can provide remarkable retardant features polymer systems, which they embedded or onto. particular, situ generation (through sol-gel processes, i.e. hydrolysis condensation reactions tailored alkoxide precursors) ceramic phases, form particles surface coatings, clearly demonstrated its effectiveness creating physical barrier degradation when subjected application It also lowers mass transfer degrading surroundings vice versa, hence providing overall enhancement fire resistance. This review work seeks up-to-date overview most recent advances methods for conferring bulk polymers, cellulosic textiles (cotton), foams. addition, current limitations potential progresses approaches discussed.
